In 1774, in the small German village of Langenberg, Johann Adam Birkenstock was registered as 'subject and shoemaker' in the church archives. In 1896, Johann's grandson, Konrad Birkenstock, who owned two specialist footwear stores in Frankfurt, started to produce contoured insoles, and 6 years later, developed the first flexible arch support to be used in factory made shoes. In 2005, the Birkenstock store in Covent Garden was named BEST NEW STORE at the Drapers Footwear Awards 2005. The events in between those times are what made Birkenstock one of todays best selling makers of quality sandals. Birkenstock - over 200 years of comfort.
